Customer Challenge

  • A rail major has been struggling to validate the design change of Grab Pole in the Gangway area using Finite Element Analysis. As the current grab pole is not ergonomically comfortable to hold, passengers may fall due to sudden change in speed or braking.
  • They have been looking for a support partner to perform Finite Element Analysis of Grab Pole for proof loads, service loads and bolt calculations. Along with evaluating the results and preparation of reports.

Scope

  • This work package consisted of following activities:
  • To validate the design change of Grab Pole (Handrail) in the gangway area using Finite Element Analysis
  • To perform Finite Element Analysis (LHS & RHS of Grab pole) for proof loads, service loads and bolt calculations. Evaluate the results and preparation of reports

Solution

  • Input study of the existing handrail design validation used
  • Understand the new concept design for the Grab Pole (Vertical) and top fixation
  • Preparation of FE model for the approved design concepts using hypermesh
  • Run the analysis for the identified combination of load cases (proof and service) in Optistruct
  • Evaluation of the results for stresses and displacements
  • Perform the bolt calculations using cobra V6.2
  • Finalization of new design concept
  • Preparation of analysis and calculation report

Features

Features

  • The right combination of skill and experience levels at a blended-rate pricing model with the highest possible value delivered
  • A retrofit design, with minimum impact on the car body

Benifits

  • The retrofit design was developed and validated by FEA
  • Minimum impact/changes on the car body

Results

  • Changed the design to vertical pole
  • Comfortable to hold the grab pole, even in sudden braking or change in speed
