Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) says, about 80% of the people affected by Covid-19 recover without any specialist treatment. However, for a sub-set of the patients, access to ventilator is considered to be the vital factor of survivability. That explains the unusually high focus and desperate need for more ventilators at Covid-19 care centers across the globe. But there is a dire shortage of these machines in hospitals across the world. Ventilator manufacturers are working with carmakers, aerospace firms and others to boost output as quickly as possible. Engineers from diverse fields such as the Mercedes Formula One team, British consumer durables major Dyson, and Ford (to name a few) have come forward to help build viable alternatives. In this PoV, Pratheep PS, Quest Global's biomedical engineering expert, gives a few handy tips to the engineering fraternity for these critical times.
